Most experts agree that improving the public’s knowledge, education, and access to healthcare is an important ingredient in maintaining the health of individuals and the welfare of the community. That’s why the African American Healthcare Association of Missouri is hosting one of the most anticipated events of the year. On Saturday September 14th, 2024, hundreds of healthcare professionals, educators, civic leaders, elected officials and others are expected to attend the inaugural presentation of the African American Healthcare Summit. The African American Healthcare Summit will address the disparities in access to healthcare, in treatment, and in professional attitudes. Recent studies have revealed that African Americans receive lower levels of medical care than other demographic groups. As a consequence of receiving lower levels of medical treatment, African American patients typically endure more pain, more suffering, and receive less attention to their illnesses, than other demographic groups, which negatively impacts the mortality rates among Blacks.
According to the 2020 U. S. Census, African Americans are 44% of the population of St. Louis, 26% of the population of St. Louis County, 26% of the population of Kansas City, and almost 12% of the population of the state of Missouri, yet the vast majority of Black citizens have limited access to professional healthcare.
